It’s no secret that mid-century modern homes have some major cool factor. It seems like every time you turn on a new Netflix series, the backdrop has been infused with some kind of mid-century modern vibe. With the popularity becoming so mainstream, some people have been asking, is this just another trend that will fizzle out?
What is Mid-Century Modern?
Midcentury modern broadly describes architecture, furniture, art and design from the middle of the 20th century. The timeframe falls into the larger modernist movement, which has roots in the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 19th century and also in the post-World War I period.
“Modernism is a philosophy that creates better living through design,” writes William Krisel in a manifesto that appears in William Krisel’s Palm Springs: The Language of Modernism (Gibbs Smith, 2016). Midcentury-modern homes, have recognizable clean lines, post-and-beam construction, open floor plan interiors, and of course the floor-to-ceiling windows. When you live in a mid-century modern home you come to recognize that it’s not a “style” or another “fad.” It’s a way to celebrate indoor/outdoor living. A way to embrace simplicity and enjoy a casual lifestyle that so many fantasize about.
The Future (in our opinion)
Right now there is a “less is more” movement going on all over America. People are waking up to the fact that a bunch of stuff isn’t going to make them happy. There is a shift taking place in mass consumer consciousness and people are starting to appreciate quality, authenticity and locally sourced merchandise over mass produced cheap cr*p. We personally think that the mid-century modernism lifestyle goes hand in hand with this new way of thinking so if you were to ask us, “Will this mid-century modern craze fizzle out in a couple years?” We would say: Absolutely not, it’s just getting started!
Last year Atlanta Magazine recently did a write up on the demand and premium mid-century modern homes are bringing! And Curbed was talking about how everyone seems to be obsessed with mid-century modern design! Atlanta might not have as many mid-century modern homes as some other cities, but we still have a few good ones left scattered around the city and tucked in charming established neighborhoods. If you are on the fence about buying it’s time to jump off and make a move. With Hollywood filming more movies in ATL than LA, we think the demand and prices are only going to increase!!
If you are looking to buy or sell your mid-century modern home we would love to talk to you about how we can help you!
