Welcome to Northcrest!
The quiet neighborhood that sits north of the I-285 southeast of Doraville, and only 11 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. It has gone unnoticed by many, but if you take a closer look you can discover why people love to live here. Northcrest boasts a rich tapestry of tree-lined streets and well-maintained homes, offering a serene oasis from the bustling city. The larger sized landscaped lots will catch your eye as you walk through this subdivision. Living here gives you that “neighborhood feel” that is rare to find these days. It is like taking a step back in time, when people walked at any hour of the day, children played outside and neighbors became lifelong friends.
Northcrest came on the horizon in 1959 when the baby boomers created a population explosion after World War II. This caused a high demand for affordable housing. The neighborhood was the first and largest housing tract in suburban Atlanta. Originally it was developed to accommodate workers at the Doraville General Motors Plant and other new industries in the area. The subdivision was designed to feature single-family homes, a multi-family apartment complex, a park, Pleasantdale Elementary School, and a swim/tennis club.
Mid Century Architecture Springs up in Northcrest
P&H Realty who developed the neighborhood, enlisted Ernest Mastin, an architect who graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology, to create several model floor plans. Mastin was influenced by California contemporary designs crafted by Frank Lloyd Wright and Joseph Eichler. He took these designs and built smaller, modest homes to give more people a chance to own one. Simplicity is the key feature of these homes. A unique split level floor plan was used to accommodate the hilly terrain. The strategic placement of large windows and open rooms bring nature right into the living space. The exterior is a mix of wood, stone and steel that blends perfectly with the natural surroundings. Today, many of these homes still stand in their original glory allowing residents and visitors to experience a nostalgic era.
A Competitive Housing Market
Now that the word is out and more people have discovered this amazing neighborhood, homes here are in high demand– especially the mid century homes. Northcrest single family homes can start at $450,00 and go up to over $800,000. Most of the homes were built between 1950 and 1975 but there are also new construction throughout the neighborhood. Many homes have been renovated and restored to their natural beauty. There are not just mid century homes here but also ranch, traditional style and a few A-frame homes too. The best part–there is no HOA in this neighborhood!
